With a yawning funding gap, pension plans increasingly are being pressured to exit the retirement saving business. All roads appear to lead to a migration from DBs to DCs or do they? Returns for defined benefit plans outperformed those for defined contribution plans by about 100 basis points in 2007 and 2008 according to an analysis by Towers Watson. What do plan sponsors need to do in terms of plan design and investment policies to ensure a strong retirement future for employees?
