The Future of Wealth Management: Catalysts and Consequences

This year, we ring the changes. After six successful years in San Francisco, the 7th Annual RIA West Investment Forum will take place at The Ritz-Carlton in beautiful Marina Del Rey, CA. This move is fitting because change, disruption and innovation are the focus of this year’s agenda.

2018 Agenda

The future of wealth management, as ever, is an unknowable thing. A few years ago, we spent much of this forum debating whether or not robo-advice would displace independent advisors entirely. Through grit and determination, this hasn’t happened and (according to our advisory board members) it won’t: robo-advisory been reduced from a major threat to a peaceful partner. That’s not to say we should rest on our laurels, however. The great transfer of wealth is underway. In many fundamental ways bigger than ESG, younger investors want to allocate their money differently. Many of them were starting their careers during the 2008 financial crisis and are distrustful of the establishment. Where can advisors look to meet their needs so that they can hang on to these hard earned assets? Is the ‘democratization of alternatives’ through the rise of platforms going to change the opportunity landscape? Which ETFs and passive vehicles should form the core of best-in-class RIA portfolios? Which active managers are worth it?

Beyond investing, change is rife in the RIA industry. At the risk of trying to get blood from a stone, the M&A discussion isn’t going anywhere. Unique value propositions are becoming harder and harder to define. Technology firms are scrambling to create holistic solutions for RIAs, but no one has the silver bullet yet. Who will come out on top? With investment management becoming increasingly commoditized, what are the added services that will win big clients?

Each year, our final forum of the year will tackle the big questions facing the future of the industry. Looking ahead to 2019 and beyond, the 1.5 day event will encourage leaders in this industry to debate, discuss, and collaborate to propel their businesses and the industry to new heights

Through expert presentations, peer-driven breakouts, and panel discussions, we will discuss the change, disruption, and innovation in the future of wealth management and solutions to succeed.
