IoT, Data, and the New Last Mile

Mar 4th - Mar 6th 2019
Claremont Club & Spa, A Fairmont Hotel

By some estimates, the Internet of Things will have grown from 2 billion objects in 2006 to 200 billion by 2020. We are already seeing numerous consequences of all these devices, and the data they are throwing off: customer location and smart shelves in supermarkets; new highway traffic patterns; smart factory assembly lines; better weather prediction; faster and safer transit systems. IoT is redefining last-mile problems in the power grid, manufacturing, smart homes and offices, personalized medicine, supply chains, security, and of course telecommunications.

Field Trip

Alan Kay, Bret Victor, and Luke Iannini—all preeminent thinkers in human–computer interface design and, more generally, the representation of objects, concepts, and relationships—invite TTI/Vanguard to experience their fully functional, ever-evolving prototype for the future of data-supported human collaboration.

“Dynamicland is a computer with no box. People walk around inside it. Computer-stuff is not made of fleeting, ephemeral images on s screen, but real physical things that enable people to think with their whole selves.

“Dynamicland is a real place, a part of our shared physical reality, not an illusion on a screen. Working in Dynamicland means being present with other people, talking with them, seeing how they work, learning from them, and helping them.

“Dynamicland is not an app store, with one-size-fits-all products to use. Dynamicland is an authoring environment. It provides the tools for people to make their own tools, remix the tools of others, and develop fluency in a medium.”

Join us for this field trip/workshop to experience a new way of interacting with objects, data, their diverse representations, and with one another.
